Exhibition Opening: “A Long Way Down” at metrobar

Date & Time
June 5, 2022
5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Event Summary

Focus on the Story and metrobar present the opening of A Long Way Down, which explores both the Brutalistic grandeur of the DC’s Metro subway system and the reality of a public transit network that, despite its failings – and there are plenty – is an essential part of the day for commuters, residents and visitors alike. Hundreds of thousands of people use the subway each week to travel through the heart of the District and into Virginia and Maryland, and each one of them has a story.

A Long Way Down presents the work of a dozen DC-area photographers who document the grit, the weirdness, the grind and the humanity of life underneath the nation’s capital.

Photographers in the exhibit: Alain Lázaro Gutiérrez Almeida, Kelly Bell, Robb Hill, Stacey Lewis, Geoff Livingston, Rengim Mutevellioglu, Angela Napili, Julian Ortiz, Victoria Pickering, Bekah Richards and Arpita Upadhyaya.

The exhibition was curated by Focus on the Story founder Joe Newman and was generously sponsored by metrobar, an outdoor venue in northeast DC that has a DC Metro subway car as its centerpiece. As a vibrant arts space, metrobar’s mission is to advance cultural, educational, and social programming through collaborative, arts-driven, and authentic DC experiences.

A Long Way Down is part of the fifth annual Focus on the Story International Photo Festival, a month-long celebration of photography in the nation’s capital. Learn more about the festival at https://focusonthestory.org/
